Building Online Communities
The 'stickiness' of a website refers to how long a visitor stays for and how many times they'll return. It's a critical measure of how engaged your visitors are with your website. One of the most cost-effective method of making your site sticky is to provide a platform for a community, an opportunity for people to share their experiences.

Given the right structure, promotion and seeding you'll be surprised how quickly an online community can grow. It's important to get the following established from the start:

  • What is the community for?
  • What have our visitors got it common? What will they be talking about?
  • Why will visitors want to participate?
  • What level of moderation should we provide?
  • How should we structure the discussion?
  • How will we promote the community, get people joining intiially?

Having established a strategic focus for the community there's some tactical detail that needs consideration:

  • Who will participate in the community? How do we register users?
  • What are the ground-rules? Define appropriate language and behaviour.
  • Who is responsible for moderating the discussion?
  • What frequency do we expect the discussion to change?
  • What tools will we use? Forums? Calendars, Newsletters, Chat Rooms?
